Being entrusted with the care and long-term preservation of artifacts and paper-based collections can be daunting without a firm grasp of preservation fundamentals. The first half of this workshop focuses on defining preventive preservation, examining the causes of deterioration in collections, common vulnerabilities of artworks and three-dimensional objects, storage and enclosures that will extend the life of materials, and general guidelines for proper handling. By applying the preservation practices in this workshop, attendees can make the best decisions for the care and handling of their collections today, while ensuring that they will be accessible for future generations.\ \ The second half of the workshop will focus on funding options for preservation projects through an overview of preservation grants, including eligible projects, important deadlines, and administrative steps. The presenter will also provide application tips that are useful for all programs, no matter the grant applied to, while hands-on practice exercises will get participants started with their next grant application\ \ Instructor Bio:\ Annie Matthys, Preservation Specialist\ NEDCC| Northeast Document Conservation Center\ \ Annie Matthys is a Preservation Specialist for NEDCC who works from her office in San Mateo, California. She provides preservation outreach information, assessments, consultations, and training programs to a variety of heritage organizations located in the western U.S. and beyond. Annie previously worked as a Preservation Specialist at Stanford University Libraries, where she was involved with preventive preservation initiatives such as environmental monitoring, integrated pest management, preservation outreach, and collections emergency response, planning, and training. She received an MLIS from Drexel University and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Archives and Records Management from Simmons College.
